Problem Note 20248: Poor performance viewing large RDBMS tables in SAS® Enterprise Guide®
Poor performance can occur when accessing large RDBMS tables in SAS
Enterprise Guide. For example, if you are working with a large Teradata
table (24 million rows, 15 columns), SAS Enterprise Guide might lock up
for at least 2-7 minutes when you are doing the following:
1. Opening the data from a library takes about 2-3 minutes.
2. If the data is already in the project, it takes 2-3 minutes
to generate a message indicating the data is already in the
project.
3. If the data is in the project but the data view/grid is closed,
it takes 2-3 minutes to reopen the data in the view/grid.
4. Data => unselect Read Only takes 3 or more minutes.
5. Editing a column can take about 7 minutes to return an error
message that indicates update access is denied.
6. After the error, closing the data view/grid might take another
7 minutes.
7. Removing a column edit after the error might take another
7 minutes.
8. Scrolling down about 60-100 rows at a time takes less than a
second, but to scroll up about 2,000 rows at once takes about
5 minutes.
In any case listed above, SAS Enterprise Guide might lock up even though
there is no CPU usage associated with the client machine.
There is currently no work around for these steps. However, if your
goal is to only view a sampling of the data, then consider one of these
options:
1. The Database Administrator (DBA) could create small sample tables
based on the larger production data so you can review the smaller
tables before running tasks against the larger production tables.
2. Use Tools => Options => Data => Data General and deselect
'Automatically open data when added to project'.
Open the data.
Build a query using Data => Filter and Query.
Drag over the columns you want.
Choose Options => Options for this Query.
Choose 'Limit output rows:' and specify a value.
Click OK, then run the query.
You can then view the resulting table.
